This visual schedule is an excellent behavior management tool for students with autism. It helps them stay focused and follow school rules by making expectations clear.

With a First, Then or First, Next, Then board, students can choose a reward after completing a task set by the teacher. For example, if you want a student to finish their work, simply place the “Do your work” picture under the “First” category.

Then, the student or teacher can choose a fun incentive to place under “Then.” Once the student completes the task, they receive the reward right away!

How to Use First Then Next Last Visual

First-Then-Next-Last boards are fantastic for students who might need that extra boost in motivation or those working on specific behavior plans. I often include them in IEPs for students with behavior goals. The package comes with printable boards featuring popular goals and incentive images, along with blank spaces for your own unique pictures.

I recommend printing these in color, laminating them, and cutting out the pieces. Just add some Velcro to the cards and reward images for easy use!

I frequently use these boards in general education classrooms for students with autism. The visual aids help clarify goals associated with rewards, increasing the chances of task completion.

An important element of the First-Then-Next-Last boards is the choice boards. Students can pick from 4-8 incentives they’re excited about. They select one to focus on for their reward, which is then placed on the First, Then board. Each new goal allows them to choose a different incentive, keeping things fresh and engaging!
