How to Maintain Classroom Discipline
What’s Classroom Management?
Teachers set out to ensure how to maintain classroom discipline that is productive, safe, and conducive to learning which is paramount to student success.
Proper classroom management and discipline is essential for creating an atmosphere of respect, trust, and cooperation.
Effective discipline does not rely solely on consequences, but rather focuses on teaching students how to problem solve, take responsibility for their actions, and strive for kindness. โค๏ธ
Teachers can maintain classroom discipline in a professional and effective manner with a few tried and true strategies.
By addressing disruptive behaviors in an appropriate and โฐ timely manner, teachers can provide a safe, calm, and secure classroom environment.
Furthermore, they can help foster an atmosphere where students can learn, be productive, and โ reach their academic goals.
Let’s check out some techniques on how to handle a challenging student, address the root causes of disruptive behavior, and provide tips on how to design an effective classroom discipline plan.
Establish Rules and Consequences for Well Maintained Classroom Discipline
Establishing rules and expectations for the classroom is an important step in teaching students responsibility and self-discipline.
Rules should be designed to foster a safe and productive learning environment, and should be age-appropriate, clear and concise.
Wording rules in a positive manner stating what to do instead of what not to do can be helpful. ๐ซฑ
Additionally, it is important to establish consequences for breaking the rules and expectations.
These consequences should be appropriate to the infraction and should provide an opportunity for the student to learn from the mistake.
Consequences should also be consistent and follow-through is key. ๐
Teachers should spend their time teaching appropriate behavior instead of correctly inappropriate actions.
Encourage Positive Behavior
Positive reinforcement encourages students to do their best and strive for excellence. ๐
When students are praised for their efforts, rather than get punished for their mistakes, they are more likely to continue trying and achieve success.
So, how can teachers do this? Reward good behavior.
Use things like Bragging ๐ awards to promote positive actions.
Did you see a student help out another? Give them the I’m a good friend bracelet.
Maybe the teacher saw someone give more effort than usual. Hand out the I worked hard ribbon.
Positive reinforcement also helps build self-confidence and a positive attitude, which can carry over into other areas of the student’s life. ๐
Additionally, positive reinforcement can be used to encourage students to follow rules and expectations, which is essential to maintaining classroom discipline.
Address Misbehavior Immediately
It is โญ๏ธ important โญ๏ธ to address misbehavior in your classroom as soon as it occurs.
Ignoring misbehavior can lead to students feeling as though their misbehavior will go unnoticed, and, therefore, feel it is acceptable to continue.
Have the tools you need at hand like a ๐ Volume Control in the classroom.
This helps teachers simply point to a visual or hand a visual to a student.
Without saying a word, the procedures that you put into place help correct behavior.
I LOVE that sooo much! โค๏ธ
When addressing misbehavior, be sure to be consistent and use clear language that the students understand. ๐ค
Use positive language to help the student understand their mistake and learn from it.
It is important that students understand that their misbehavior has consequences and that their actions have an effect on their classmates.
In addition, it is essential to remain ๐ calm and not allow emotions to take over your response.
Be the Fun Teacher to Maintain Classroom Discipline
While it is important to set clear expectations for your students, it is equally important to spread kindness and joy.
Have you heard the saying for teachers, “Don’t smile until after Labor Day?” ๐
Ugh. No, thanks. I don’t want to be miserable, and I don’t want my students to be miserable either.
As the teacher, you are a model for your students and the way you act and the way you speak to your students will have a dramatic effect on the overall classroom atmosphere.
Make sure to treat your students with respect, stay calm and patient when addressing any issues, and strive to be a positive role model for your students.
Present fun lessons, share a piece of your personal life that you are comfortable sharing, and practice what you preach.
Human behavior says that we want to please people we like. ๐ค
Establishing a great connection with your students can in turn make them want to display good behavior.
I was teaching a middle school class one day, when one of the kids said something funny which caused me to respond with something one.
This lead to the whole class laughing and adding to the fun. ๐คญ
Then, it got to the point where we were all laughing so hard that breathing was a challenging.
Of course, this made everything funnier. ๐
One of the amazing counselors was walking by the room and came it to see what all the noise was about.
What only made us laugh harder. ๐
After she realized we were just having a laughing binge, she smiled, winked at me and left.
The counselor was well aware that I had very few behavior problems in my class and she got to witness why.
P.S. I still giggle when I think of that class period. So. Much. Fun. I love them all. โค๏ธ
Create a Supportive Environment
As a special education teacher, I get a lot of students who have behavior goals.
The goals are tracked, documented, and reported out on. ๐
But most teachers aren’t showing kids how to cope before an incident begins.
Instead, teachers are there for crisis management support and to help deescalate a problem.
I highly recommend treating behavior goals the same as academic goals.
This means have small groups that work on the skill or skills needed for growth. ๐
A meltdown or a tantrum are not learning opportunities.
Educators need to create a positive and supportive learning environment by implementing a variety of classroom strategies.
Establish positive relationships with students, provide clear directions, use positive reinforcement, and provide meaningful feedback.
Encouraging students to participate in discussions, activities, and collaborative problem-solving can also help students to gain confidence and develop social-emotional skills.
Show your students what to do when they get made. Then, have them act it out. ๐ญ
Then, do this again and again with different scenarios.
Additionally, educators should make sure to actively listen to their students and provide meaningful feedback.
This can help students to create a sense of belonging in the classroom and feel comfortable expressing their ideas and opinions.
Remain Consistent with Consequences
It is important to stay consistent with consequences when students break rules.
Consequences should be logical and appropriate for the situation.
I love a good old natural consequence.
If someone makes a mess in the room, they have to clean it up before moving to the next activity.
When a student rips up a ๐ paper, they can tape it back together and then finish the work.
Make the consequence fit the misbehavior.
And please, try not to take away recess. They need to move. ๐โโ๏ธ
Itโs important to be consistent with expectations, rules, and consequences so that students know that the teacher means business and will not be taken advantage of.
Doing this allows students to learn which behaviors are acceptable and which are not. ๐ค
When students know that there are predictable consequences for inappropriate behavior, they are more likely to adhere to the rules.
Address Misbehaviors Immediately
When a student misbehaves, address it immediately and address it the same way each time.
This helps establish boundaries, shows that the teacher is in control and is consistent in their expectations.
Additionally, it can help the student to understand what is acceptable and what is not.
When addressing a misbehavior, it’s important to avoid ๐ณ shaming or embarrassing the student.
Every broken rule is an opportunity to grow and learn.
I always told my kindergarteners that I won’t let students hurt other’s bodies because then none of us would feel safe to come to school to learn. ๐
We would talk about how upsetting and unsettling it would be if we were reading a book wondering if someone was going to kick us at any minute.
So, barring any emergencies, we keep our bodies to ourselves so everyone feels safe.
Providing a firm but fair consequence and making sure to explain why the behavior was wrong is crucial.
Foster a Positive Learning Environment
In order to maintain classroom discipline, it is essential to create a positive learning environment that fosters respect and encourages open communication. ๐ฃ
Classroom expectations should be clearly communicated to students and reinforced throughout the school year.
Rewards for positive behavior should be given and consequences for negative behavior should be consistent and immediate.
Resist the urge to tell someone over and over to do something. ๐
Tell them once and if they don’t do it, help them get started with the task.
Additionally, teachers should be proactive in addressing misbehaviors as soon as they occur, and create a supportive environment by addressing individual student needs and providing positive reinforcement.
Finally, teachers should model the same behavior they expect from their students, setting a positive example of how to treat others with respect.
Strategies for Classroom Discipline
Classroom discipline is essential for creating a safe, productive learning environment where students can reach their full potential.
As an educator, it is your responsibility to structure your classroom in a way that is conducive to learning and effective behaviors. ๐ฉโ๐ซ
This can be difficult, especially for new teachers or those working with high-acuity students.
I finding using fidgets and sensory stimulating items can be very helpful. Check out my favorite things for the classroom by clicking here. ๐ช
