AI Tools for Special Education Students
AI tools for special education students assist students with IEPs in reading, writing, and learning in the classroom. ๐ป
The field of special education has seen incredible growth and development over the past few decades in terms of both research and practical implementation of evidence-based practices.
One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the increasing accessibility of AI tools designed to assist special education students in their development.
AI tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated and user-friendly. ๐ง
They are offering a range of opportunities for special education professionals to better support the success of their students.
Subsequently, these tools can be used to improve instructional strategies, enhance student engagement and progress, and foster greater accessibility for all students.
AI Tools for SPED
Artificial intelligence can support kids with special needs educationally.
I see it building self-esteem and encouraging positive behavior in the school setting. ๐
AI tools like Readability, Grammarly, and Dragon Naturally Speaking provide students with the support they need to read, write, and learn.
These tools can provide feedback, correct mistakes, and assist with comprehension.
Additionally, AI tools like Google Classroom can be used to create a personalized learning environment for special education students. ๐
With these tools, special education students can more easily access and understand the material.
This fosters an environment of inclusivity and equality in the classroom.
These tools can be tailored to meet the individual needs of students.
AI can be used to assess progress and provide support in academics and social-emotional skills.
Special education AI can help students by making learning more accessible, engaging, and successful for those with special needs.
AI is Meeting Student Needs NOW
Do you remember when word suggestion was introduced to smart phones? People all around me panicked.
They were like, “How did the phone know that’s what I was going to say next?” ๐ฑ
Some people asked, “How did it get the spelling right for my best friend’s name?”
It’s because the AI is learning and growing with you.
I’ll admit I was a bit creeped out at first. ๐งโโ๏ธ
But now, I just think of it as my personal assistant who is paid to know my needs.
With AI tools, the technology can tailor itself to the student’s individual needs.
AI tools can provide students with special education needs the opportunity to learn and process information more efficiently.
How does it do this? ๐ค
By providing them with personalized reading and writing assistance.
AI tools can also provide students with the ability to break down complex ideas into smaller chunks, allowing them to better understand the material.
Also, AI tools can offer students real-time feedback as they work, encouraging them to stay motivated and on track.
It would take me about 30 minutes longer to write this article if I didn’t have autocorrect fixing my misspelled and mistyped words as I went. โฐ
I love that feature of AI and love that my students can benefit from it, too.
Next, use a free app like TikTok to create videos for your students and add closed captions.
This is super amazing for students who need visualization.
AI Tools for Special Education Accommodations
AI tools can be used to customize instruction to the student’s individual needs, provide quick feedback, and provide access to resources.
And, as long as there is an ๐ internet connection, it always there.
So, I typically have about 30 students on my caseload.
It’s impossible for me to be there to support them at all times.
But the AI tools can be there.
They can be there all the time.
And if we teach kids how to use the tools, they will have so much more instant support in the classroom.
AI tools can also help to differentiate instruction for students with special needs.
It can help students to access content that is differentiated for their individual learning levels.
These tools can also help in providing access to the curriculum.
This is important for students who are visually impaired students and may have difficulty in reading printed material.
Talk to text is a wonderful tool that allows students to dictate their thoughts to a AI on a computer or smart device. ๐ฃ
Then, these tools help the students who have difficulty with occupational therapy (OT) skills and those who struggle with spelling.
It can also provide students with a sense of independence, as they can create content without needing to write it down.
Additionally, the AI can provide feedback on grammar and spelling errors which will help students improve their writing skills.
Some talk to text programs even have features that allow students to create their own personalized vocabulary lists, which will help them learn new words.
AI tools can be used to help special education students access learning materials and keep up with the rest of the class. ๐ซ
AI Tools and Cheating
There is a growing concern about students with access to technology using AI to cheat by fully completing their writing assignments for them.
But what if this could be a positive? ๐
Rather than having students complete entire essays with the help of AI, let’s start small.
Specialized AI tools can be used to help students with special education needs to learn how to write better.
AI tools can be used to help students better understand grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, allowing students to better express themselves and their ideas.
Artificial intelligence can also be used to help students with reading comprehension and providing detailed feedback and personalized guidance. ๐
This is crucial so that students can more effectively understand and apply what they have read.
AI tools can also be used to increase a studentโs attention span, helping them stay focused and engaged in the learning process.
With the right AI tools, special education students can be better prepared to take on the challenges of the classroom and excel in their education.
AI is the ๐ฎ future so I highly suggest that teachers begin embracing the change.
Let’s figure out how to utilize the tool for our special ed students instead of fighting it away.
AI is the Future for Special Ed
Remember how nervous everyone was about letting students use calculators? ๐งฎ
Now all students get to use calculators on their state standardized assessment in my home state of Indiana.
And remember how hard it was to get voice dictation added to an IEP as an accommodation?
It’s a pretty common practice now. ๐
If you’ve ever read a paper written by a student without AI and one without, you can see that it really makes a difference.
Technology can be just as beneficial for special ed students and can help them to better understand their schoolwork.
This will help them learn more effectively, and become more independent learners.

AI tools can be used to help special ed students with word processing, spelling, and grammar.
Tools in AI also help them stay organized and manage their time more efficiently.
They can even help special ed students with communication, reading comprehension, and mathematics.
There are so many possibilities with AI tools. ๐งฐ
It’s important for teachers to be open to exploring them and finding the right ones that can help their special ed students succeed.
