Social scripting provides catch phrases for students with autism to use in every day scenarios to help them communication with others and have social skill success.

Description

Social scripting is an easy way to teach your students with autism social skills in a meaningful and functional manner.

Have you heard how children pick up phrases they hear over and over again?

Catchy sayings from television shows, commercials and songs often find their way into our daily language: Iโ€™ve fallen and I canโ€™t get up; To infinity and beyond; This is Jake from State Farm; and I like to move it, move it.

Repetitive scripting embeds phrases and sentences into our daily language.

After observing this in many students with autism and other individuals with speech and language disorders, I decided to create social scripts to provide students and adults with appropriate language to use for common daily situations and problems.

This social scripting story set includes

  • Arguing
  • Asking for a Drink
  • Asking for a Toy
  • Asking to go to the Restroom
  • Clean Up
  • Computer Use and Stopping
  • Doing Something You Donโ€™t Like
  • Easy Work
  • Feelings
  • Fire Drills
  • Friends
  • Getting Someoneโ€™s Attention
  • Help
  • How Are You?
  • Iโ€™m Sorry
  • Inner Monologue: Thoughts to Yourself
  • Making a Food Choice
  • Making a Choice
  • Open This
  • Picking Your Nose
  • Picture Day
  • Restroom Help (Two Different Versions)
  • Taking a Work Break
  • Whatโ€™s Your Name?
  • Winning and Losing
  • Work

Social scripting is best started in a one-to-one teaching or counseling situation.

After the student has had an opportunity to become familiar with the script, practice should begin within daily social situations.

Social scripting is a tool for prompting positive communication and socially acceptable behavior.

Phrases listed in the green dialogue boxes must be highlighted and encouraged to be repeated often just like the catch phrases found in media.

When students are exposed to these phrases often, they are more likely to use them in their daily communication and revert to the key social scripting phrases during times of conflict.
