Token Board Template for Behavior Support
A token board template is a simple, effective way to encourage positive behavior and keep students motivated.
This is one my favorite go-to resources.
These handy tools are a game-changer for teachers, therapists, and parents alike.
Whether youโre working with students in a classroom, running an ABA therapy session, or managing behavior at home, token boards make it easier to stay on track.
They are widely used because they work and theyโre actually fun to use.
What Is a Token Board Template?
At its core, a token board is a visual system that rewards students for completing tasks or meeting goals.
Students earn tokens as they work toward a reward.
Once all the tokens are earned, they get their chosen incentive!
Itโs a simple yet powerful way to reinforce positive behavior and teach self-regulation skills.
First, start with a goal that the student is working for.
Then, identify the reward before handing out tokens.
I prefer printed and laminated circles to give the tokens a “money” feel.
But tokens can be any small moveable item you can think of including
- Pennies (real or fake coins)
- Bingo chips
- Laminated stickers
- Buttons
- Board game pieces
- Glass stones (flat on one side)
- Checkers pieces
- Poker chips
Why a Token Board Template Works
Hereโs the secret: token boards are all about clear expectations and motivation.
They help students understand exactly what they need to do to earn their reward.
This structure can be especially helpful for kids with autism or other special needs who thrive on predictable routines and visual supports.
But, honestly?
Token boards are amazing for any child who benefits from a little extra encouragement.
This includes students who are in general education without any special education needs.
Versatile Options for Every Situation
The beauty of token board templates is their flexibility.
I recommend a variety of token board templates.
Useful designs come in sets of 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10 tokens, so you can choose the format that works best for each student.
Need a quick win for a younger child?
Use a 2-token board.
Want to help an older student build stamina and focus?
Try a 10-token set.
I also love using holiday-themed token boards.
They bring a touch of seasonal fun to your behavior management and keep things fresh.
Think pumpkins for October or snowflakes for December!
These little details can make earning tokens even more exciting for your students.
Ready-to-Use Features
To make your life easier, each token board template includes:
- Choice Boards: Let students select their rewards ahead of time to keep them invested in the process. Each board offers space for 4 or 8 options, making it easy to adapt for different interests.
- Goals: With ready-made goal cards, you can hit the ground running. Examples include goals like โDo Your Work,โ โFollow Directions,โ and โStay in Your Seat,โ define the objective for each student. Most can be taken straight from IEPs, behavior plans, or intervention plans.
- Incentives: Reward choices are what make the token board templates work. Incentives such as extra recess, a favorite snack, or screen time. I love having a board of all rewards and letting the student pick. While many kids want the same reward time and again give them the option to change out the reward after each completion.
- Customizable Options: Token board templates let you create personalized goals and rewards tailored to your students’ unique needs. A variety of colors and tokens can be motivating for diverse needs.
Where Can You Use a Token Board Template?
Classroom:ย Help students stay focused during independent work, transitions, or group activities. Token boards are especially useful for students on behavior plans or IEPs.
Therapy Sessions:ย ABA therapists can use token boards to reinforce skills and celebrate progress. Theyโre an essential part of many behavior intervention plans.
Home:ย Parents love using token boards for chores, homework, or even bedtime routines. Theyโre a practical way to encourage cooperation and create positive habits.
Also, important for the token boards is the easy of resetting them.
Because you are rewarding a student often, you are staying on top of moving tokens, goals, and rewards around.
But, unlike behavior charts, you don’t need a new sheet each time.
Simply move the tokens off the board and start over!
How to Get Started
- Print and Prepare: Print the token boards in color and laminate them for durability. Cut out the tokens, goals, and reward cards.
- Set Up Your System: Use Velcro to attach tokens and cards so theyโre easy to swap out. Keep everything organized and accessible.
- Choice Boards: Print and laminate the choice boards as well. Add Velcro to the boards and rewards. If you want to display all of the rewards, a file folder with Velcro works great.
- Pick Your Token Number: Decide what number of tokens to start with and match your board with that number. Younger students and those who need more frequent motivation should start with 2 or 3 tokens. The more advanced a student is and the longer they can maintain their focus the more tokens they can work with.
- Introduce the Boards: Demonstrate the token boards to the student. Show and discuss how they earn tokens and what happens when they fill up their board. I recommend doing role playing for this to get a reward while practicing.
- Celebrate Success: Watch your studentsโ faces light up as they earn tokens and achieve their goals!
