I’ll show you how to create a token board, how to determine appropriate rewards, and how to implement the system effectively. ๐Ÿ†

Whether you are an educator, therapist, or parent, token boards can be your secret weapon for motivating children with special needs and helping them reach their full potential.

What Are Token Board?

Are you looking for a way to motivate your child with special needs?

Look no further than token boards!

Token boards are a powerful tool for encouraging positive behavior in children with a wide range of disabilities.

But what are token boards exactly? ๐Ÿค”

Simply put, token boards are visual aids that help children track and understand their progress toward specific goals.

They usually consist of a board or chart with a series of spaces or boxes, and tokens or stickers that the child can earn for completing tasks or exhibiting positive behaviors.

As the child earns more tokens, they move closer to achieving their goal.

Also called “I’m Working for” boards, token boards are a visual representation of steps, goals, or work that a child has done.

When all of the tokens or dots are collected on a board, a reward is given. ๐ŸŽ

It’s a simple yet effective way to help children understand the connection between their actions and their progress, and to encourage them to keep working toward their goals.

So if you’re looking for a way to motivate and empower your child with special needs, consider incorporating token boards into your routine!

How Do Token Boards Work?

Token boards are a fantastic tool for motivating children with special needs.

They work by breaking down a larger goal or task into smaller, more manageable steps that a child can work towards. ๐Ÿชœ

Each time the child completes one of these steps, they receive a token to add to their board.

Then, once they have earned a certain number of tokens, they receive a reward or prize.

A token board can have as little as one token for a reward but no more than five.

This helps keep the work and the reward manageable for both the student and the educator.

A reward can be something as simple as extra playtime, a favorite snack, or even a fun outing with a parent or caregiver.

The key is to make the reward something that the child will find motivating and enjoyable, so that they are more likely to keep working towards their goal. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Overall, token boards are a powerful way to help children with special needs build confidence, develop new skills, and achieve success in a fun and engaging way.

Benefits of Using Token Boards

Using token boards can be a fantastic way to motivate children with special needs and help them achieve their goals.

Here are just three of the benefits that come with using token boards: ๐Ÿฅณ

1. Encourages Positive Behavior – โœ…

A token board is an effective way to promote positive behavior, as it rewards good behavior by giving tokens that can be exchanged for rewards.

Children are motivated to repeat the positive behavior to earn more tokens.

This positive reinforcement approach can be especially helpful for children with special needs who may have difficulty with negative feedback.

2. Builds Confidence – โœ…

When a child with special needs achieves a goal set on their token board, it can be a huge confidence booster.

Also, the visual representation of progress and success can help children feel proud of themselves and their accomplishments.

This, in turn, can help them build the self-esteem necessary to tackle even more challenging tasks.

3. Teaches Goal-Setting – โœ…

Token boards help children with special needs learn to set achievable goals and work towards them.

This skill is essential for success in both academics and life in general.

As children learn to set goals and track their progress, they gain the skills necessary to become self-directed and motivated learners.

How to Make Token Boards

Making a token board is easy and can be done in just a few simple steps.

For the quick and easy method, grab a piece of cardboard or cardstock, Velcro or glue, some markers, and stickers.

Draw a rectangle or square on your card-stock and cut it. โœ‚๏ธ

Then, pick how many tokens you’d like and draw that many circles.

Next, make your moveable tokens to go into the circles.

Materials I recommend for the moveable tokens are

  • Laminated dots
  • Bingo chips
  • Pennies
  • Stickers
  • Poker chips

Then, add Velcro, a glue dot, or sticky putty to your tokens so they can be easily moved on and off your board. ๐Ÿ”ด

Lastly, add a picture of the reward your student is working for and you are ready to go!

With these simple materials, you can create a customized token board that will help your child stay motivated and focused.

How to Use Token Boards

Like every tool, you have to know how to use it to be successful. ๐Ÿงฐ

Always teach a behavior tool before expecting the student to use it during work time.

When it comes to motivating my students, I like to start by setting achievable goals.

There are 3 different versions of the I am working for boards.

The boards either have 3, 4 or 5 empty circles.

Students who need faster reinforcement begin with the 3 circle board and then increase to the 4 circle board and then finally the 5 circle board.

I use yellow dots that are transferred one at a time to the empty circle when targeted behavior is observed. ๐ŸŸก

When the student is โ€œcaughtโ€ following the rule or exhibiting the desired behavior, a dot is awarded.

When the student collects all of the dots on the board, he or she pays the teacher with the 5 dots and is immediately given the reward that was targeted.

I use these often for students with autism in the general education classroom.

The visual aids and five dots help them see the goal and gradually work for it.

I usually begin a token board with three tasks and have the student show success with this for ten consecutive school days before moving on to four tasks, and then five.

To get started, I print out the I’m Working For boards, reward choice boards, the student’s behavior goal, and the counters.

Then, I simply cut out the boards and glue them onto a larger piece of construction paper before laminating them for durability.

Also, I always remember to use hard Velcro on the stationary parts and soft Velcro on the moveable parts.

“Soft travels” is my little reminder to keep things in order. ๐Ÿš€

Reward Ideas for Token Boards

The choice boards are an important part of the I am working for boards.

First identify a target behavior on the choice board which is labeled as โ€œMy goal.โ€

To make this fast and efficient, I have a bank of premade goals to grab from. ๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ

Then, the student selects either between 4-8 incentives that they are interested in working for.

The student then selects one reward to focus on and places it on the token board at the start of an empty board.

Next, the student picks a different reward at the beginning of each restart of the card.

Here are 5 great reward ideas to get you started:

  • Stickers: Kids love stickers! They come in all kinds of designs, so you can find something that matches your child’s interests.
  • Extra screen time: For many kids, screen time is the ultimate reward. If you limit your child’s screen time during the day, offering extra time as a reward can be a powerful motivator.
  • Special snack: A special snack can be a great reward for kids who love food. Consider something healthy, like a fruit smoothie or a homemade trail mix.
  • Art supplies: If your child loves to draw or paint, new art supplies can be a fun and rewarding prize. Try a new set of markers, crayons, or watercolor paints.
  • Activity time: What activity does your student love to do? Maybe it’s the playground slide, playing with a class pet, swinging, stacking chairs, etc. Whatever it is, make that their reward.

No matter what reward motivates your student, I recommend keeping a list of all the rewards you presently have. ๐Ÿ“

Update and add to it as often as you need but keep your ready to grab from set so you can quickly set up your token boards.

Tips for Using Token Boards

Token boards are a powerful tool for motivating children with special needs.

They can be used to reinforce positive behavior, track progress in therapy sessions, and more.

But, like any tool, token boards are most effective when they are used correctly.

So, here are six tips to help you get the most out of your token boards:

1. Choose the right token board for your child’s needs.

There are many different types of token boards, so it’s important to select one that is appropriate for your child’s age, interests, and abilities.

2. Teach the token board tool.

Practice using the token board before expecting your student to understand and respond appropriately to it.

3. Make the rewards meaningful.

The rewards your child earns for completing a token board should be something they really want. This could be a favorite toy, a special outing, or even something as simple as extra screen time.

4. Be consistent.

Token boards are most effective when they are used consistently over time. Make sure to use the same token board for each behavior you want to reinforce, and use it consistently across different environments.

5. Break down tasks into smaller steps.

If your child struggles with completing a task, break it down into smaller steps and use a token board to reinforce each step. This can help your child feel more motivated and accomplished.

6. Use visual cues.

Many children with special needs visual cues to remind them of the task at hand. Use the tokens, the goal, and reward pieces to make the whole token board work successfully.

Token Boards in the Classroom

Token boards are a game changer for teachers and parents who are working with children with special needs. ๐ŸŽฏ

They are a visual way to help children track their own progress and stay motivated, which is especially important for those who struggle with attention and focus.

Token boards are essentially visual charts that children can use to track their own progress toward a specific goal.

Once the child has earned enough tokens, they can exchange them for a reward, which can be anything from extra playtime to a special treat.

Token boards are easy to use and customizable to meet the specific needs of the child, making them an effective tool for any classroom or home setting.

To use them in the classroom, I recommend keeping the tokens in a spot in the classroom you can easily grab or in your pocket.

I like to store mine in a small basket suction cupped to my wipe-off board.

If you need more assistance making sure you are awarding tokens in a timely manner, set yourself a timer for every 5, 10, or 15 minutes.

Then, check in when the timer goes for to award a token. โณ

If you have any other adults in the classroom, train them on how to use the token board so they can also award token.

Make sure you have a procedure set up for when you student receives an award.

If it’s a quiet classroom activity, you can often handle that by yourself.

However, if it’s a trip to the sensory room, talk with your team or administrator to see who would be available to help chaperone your student.

A little planning goes a long way!

Token Boards at Home

Token boards are a powerful tool for motivating children with special needs, and they can reinforce positive behavior at home.

These boards work by providing a visual representation of the individual tasks or behaviors that a child needs to complete or exhibit.

When the child successfully completes a task or demonstrates positive behavior, they receive a token or sticker to place on the board. โญ๏ธ

If a student is using a token board at school and is making gains, try using the same system at home.

Typical uses for the token boards at home are

  • Chores
  • Trying new things
  • Going to appointments
  • Eating vegetables
  • Making eye contact
  • Communicating
  • Helping with a task

Then child earns a reward or prize for their hard work when the board is filled with tokens.

This system is highly effective because it provides a clear and tangible way for children to track their progress and see the results of their efforts.

Plus, it’s an easy carry over from school helping student understand that work and rewards happen in multiple environments.

With a little creativity and dedication, token boards can be a secret weapon for motivating children with special needs and helping them reach their full potential. ๐Ÿก

Themed token boards are a great way to engage children and make the process of earning tokens more enjoyable.

If you have a student who is extremely interested in a certain topic, character, or location, try a themed board.

I’ve had students pay no attention to my behavior support visuals until I added their favorite interest to them.

The themes you can create are never ending but a few examples include

  • superheroes ๐Ÿฆนโ€โ™‚๏ธ
  • animals ๐Ÿฆ„
  • space ๐Ÿš€
  • dinosaurs ๐Ÿฆ–
