When it comes to managing a busy day, schedules can be a game-changer.

Creating a written visual schedule is a valuable tool not only for individuals with autism but also for staff, teachers, and students. 

As a busy special education teacher, having a well-planned schedule can make all the difference.

This includes making a master schedule for your students and your staff.

Creating this master schedule is my number one recommendation for all sped teachers.

It helps the day flow and reduces confusion among kids and adults.

Plus it helps make sure everyone gets their lunch break!

By breaking your day into manageable chunks and allocating specific time slots for different activities, you can ensure that everything gets done efficiently and effectively.

Schedules also allow you to identify pockets of time that you can use assessments and planning.

So, open up your template, add a date, and start organizing.

Remember to change the date on the top of the schedule each time a modification is made.

Customize schedules for individual needs

Creating customized schedules is essential for meeting individual needs and promoting success in daily routines.

Everyone has unique requirements, preferences, and commitments that should be taken into consideration when planning their schedules.

This means that not all of your students will be using the same type of schedule.

You might have one advanced student using a digital schedule on a Chromebook.

Another student might only be ready for a First, Then board.

You’re student who always wants to go to sensory might need a pull-flap schedule to stay on take.

By tailoring schedules to individual needs, we can optimize productivity, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

So, embrace the power of customization and design schedules that cater to your students’ specific needs.

You’ll find that a personalized approach to scheduling leads to greater satisfaction and overall well-being.

Let’s take a look at the different types of schedules I use in my classroom.

Printable Picture Autism Visual Schedules

Printable picture schedules are a fantastic tool for individuals with autism to simplify their daily routines.

These schedules use visual cues, such as pictures or symbols, to represent tasks or activities that a student is to complete.

The visual nature of these schedules helps individuals with autism understand and follow their daily routines more easily.

They provide a clear and structured format that promotes independence, reduces anxiety, and enhances communication skills.

Here’s how to use them:

  • Get a set of picture cards that match your classroom activities.
  • Print in color.
  • Laminate and cut out.
  • Add velcro.
  • Use an organizing method to manage the pieces. I use large binders with baseball trading card sleeves for this.
  • Match the visual schedules to the master schedule.
  • Include a pocket, baggie or box for “used” pictures to be discarded in.
  • Teach your staff how to set and reset the schedules each day.
  • Train your students how to use the schedule.

Printable picture schedules are customizable to include specific tasks, timeframes, and even incorporate rewards or incentives to motivate individuals.

By utilizing these schedules, individuals with autism can navigate their day and successfully participate in their education.

Pull Flap Schedules

Pull flap schedules are an innovative and interactive variation of visual schedules that can greatly benefit individuals with autism in simplifying their daily routines.

These schedules feature pull-out flaps that reveal the next task or activity to be completed.

This interactive element adds an extra layer of engagement and excitement for individuals, making it more enjoyable to follow their routines.

Pull flap schedules provide a hands-on approach that encourages active participation and helps individuals with autism stay focused and motivated throughout their day.

I use these for students who

  • struggle understanding how to pull one activity at a time
  • struggle spatial reasoning
  • need help pacing
  • stress out over a long list of activities

By incorporating pull flap schedules into daily routines, individuals with autism can experience a more interactive and structured approach to managing their activities.

This additional schedule option leads to independence and a greater sense of accomplishment.

Portable Velcro Autism Visual Schedules

Portable velcro schedules are another invaluable tool in simplifying daily routines for individuals with autism.

These schedules are compact and easily portable, allowing individuals to carry them wherever they go.

The use of velcro allows for flexibility and customization, as users can easily attach and detach visual cues and symbols to indicate different tasks or activities.

This flexibility is especially beneficial when unexpected changes or transitions occur, as caregivers and individuals can easily modify the schedule on the go.

The portable nature of these schedules also promotes independence, as individuals can take control of their own routines and refer to the schedule whenever needed.

I love using these for inclusion students who need a visual schedule but travel throughout the school with their peers.

It’s handy, easy to use, and overall comforting for those with autism.

Also, it’s nice to have in the self-contained classroom for older students who understand schedules.

Wall space is valuable real estate, so having a portable schedule can be helpful.

Whether it’s at home, school, or in the community, portable velcro schedules provide a practical solution to help individuals with autism navigate their daily lives with ease and confidence.

First Then Boards

When it comes to simplifying daily routines for individuals with autism, first then boards are a fantastic tool to have.

These boards visually represent tasks or activities in a simple and easy-to-understand manner.

By using clear and concise visuals, individuals can easily comprehend what needs to be done first and what will come next.

The beauty of first then boards lies in their effectiveness in breaking down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps.

This not only helps individuals with autism stay organized and focused, but it also provides a sense of structure and predictability, which can be incredibly comforting for them.

For students who have master the First Then schedule but aren’t ready for a larger one, I use First, Next, Then boards.

This adds one additional schedule piece to this system and helps expand the user’s abilities.

With first then boards, individuals with autism can follow their daily routines with confidence and independence, making their days much smoother and less stressful.

I’m Working for Boards

Another autism visual schedules that simplifies daily routines is the I’m working for board.

I’m Working For” boards serve as motivational tools, allowing individuals to visualize rewards after completing designated tasks.

This reinforces positive behavior and encourages task completion.

Digital interactive and printable I’m working for boards allow the student to choose their reward.

There are 3 different versions of the I am working for boards.

The boards either have 3, 4 or 5 empty circles.

Students who need faster reinforcement begin with the 3 circle board and then increase to the 4 circle board and then finally the 5 circle board.

Dots are transferred one at a time to the empty circle when targeted behavior is observed.

When the student is “caught” following the rule or exhibiting the desired behavior, a dot is awarded.

Students collect all of the dots on the board, pays the teacher with the 5 dots and is immediately given their reward.

The visual aids and five dots help them see the goal and gradually work for it.

The choice boards are an important part of the I am working for boards.

First the teacher identifies a target behavior on the choice board which is labeled as “My goal.”

Then the student selects either between 4-8 incentives that they want to work for.

Out of these incentives the student then selects one to focus on for a reward and places it on the I am working for board at the start of an empty board.

The student is able to pick a different reward at the beginning of each restart of the card.

These are useful in school for general education teachers, special education teacher, specialists, and therapists. Many parents also utilize them at home.

Digital Schedules for the Computer

Using digital schedules for the computer can be a game-changer when it comes to simplifying daily routines for individuals with autism.

With the convenience of technology, these digital schedules provide a visually appealing and interactive way to organize activities.

Also, most kids with autism are drawn to technology.

This makes digital based schedules fun and interesting!

By incorporating colorful and engaging visuals, along with customizable features, individuals with autism can easily navigate their daily routines.

The digital format allows for easy modifications and updates, ensuring that the schedules can adapt to individual needs as they evolve.

Whether it’s setting reminders, tracking progress, or providing step-by-step instructions, digital schedules for the computer offer a user-friendly solution to support individuals with autism in managing their daily lives more efficiently.

Mini Schedules

Mini schedules are a practical and effective tool for simplifying daily routines for individuals with autism.

These compact and portable schedules provide a visual guide to help navigate through tasks and activities throughout the day.

By breaking down the routine into smaller, manageable steps, individuals with autism can better understand and follow their daily schedule.

Mini schedules are customizable to meet individual needs and preferences, making them a versatile resource.

They offer a friendly and accessible way to promote independence and reduce stress.

This includes getting ready in the morning, completing chores, or engaging in leisure activities.

So if you’re a parent or caregiver to a child with autism, don’t be afraid to try using visual schedules to simplify their daily routines.

It may take some time and patience to find the right schedule, but the benefits are well worth it.
